I first heard about Unite for Sight's work when I attended the Unite for Sight Global Health and Innovation Conference at Yale University in April 2010. I became very interested in the organization, as well as global health delivery, social entrepreneurship, and eye care. This past summer, I had the privilege of working as a Unite for Sight Global Health Leadership Intern in New Haven, CT. I learnt an incredible amount about Unite for Sight's unique and innovative efforts to improve the health of people around the world living in poverty. You can read more about my internship here. One of my favorite internship projects was designing visual patient education tools for describing cataract surgery procedures and post-cataract surgery complications and treatment. These graphics were developed for research studies in Unite For Sight's Global Impact Lab, and the research focuses on the efficacy of visual aids in India and Ghana. After my internship, and this project in particular, I knew I just had to get involved with Unite for Sight's Global Impact Corps program in Ghana.
I’m very excited to travel to Ghana for such an important cause and to work as a volunteer with Unite for Sight's partner eye clinics in Accra and surrounding regions. I’m also excited to be sharing this experience with all of you through this blog! My goal is to raise $3,000 to fund sixty eye surgeries for people living in extreme poverty. Additionally I have also collected 600 pairs of glasses that I will distribute in Ghana. If you would like to join the cause, please check out the links above.
